Impact for your research

Excellent research deserves attention. Publishing on te.ma gives your content more impact - even beyond research circles. We connect scientific questions to pressing social debates.

Your content is open-access without restriction

All articles remain permanently available thanks to archiving in our database and the assignment of DOIs.

New paths in science communication

Together with our curators, guest authors and partners, we create ideal knowledge channels for renowned research that addresses the public and provides input for the complex issues of our time.

Our Partners

With te.ma, I can become an expert in a specialised field in just one weekend.

Max von Grafenstein, Professor (UdK Berlin) and Co-Head of Research Programme (HIIG Berlin)

As a speechwriter and author for corporate communications, te.ma's linguistics channels always offer me a differentiated experience of insight - quite different from the often heated debates about gender language in the conventional media, for example.

The innovative concept of te.ma takes into account the needs of the scientific community and creates a user-friendly environment for the exchange of ideas.

Sebastian Waters, Business Director and Co-Founder MAD

The site is ideal for getting to know other points of view and engaging in in-depth discussions. The "I disagree" function in particular is quite refreshing.

I think the definition of the problem on which te.ma is based is extremely relevant.

Alexey Yusupov, Head of the Russia Programme at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

The minds at te.ma know: You need facts, facts and more facts. But only with their interpretation in clear language does the hour of realisation strike.

Achim Engelberg, author, curator and event organiser

On te.ma I find particularly well organised, informative articles on current topics that encourage me to read on and comment.

faq

te.ma:

What exactly is te.ma?

te.ma is a digital platform that makes academic positions on social issues accessible. A team of researchers, editors and guest authors present the most important papers, books and relevant information from the web in accessible language. In the te.ma forums, experts and interested non-specialists also engage in dialogue.

Dual structures:

I already do science communication - why do I need you?

Our partners at the University of Tübingen have put it in a nutshell: contemporary science communication is based on several pillars. In addition to our own blogs, events and individual social media communication, publishing on and with te.ma is a complementary measure and enrichment. With us, you dare to try something new on an innovative platform, invest in journalistic formats, tie in with current social debates and put your team at the centre of attention.

Impact:

What do you mean when you talk about impact?

For us, impact is a combination of scientific relevance and social perception. Through te.ma, relevant research reaches the public and thus enriches the societal discourse.

Non-profit:

How do you finance yourselves?

te.ma is a non-profit limited company. The Konvert Foundation provides the initial funding, and in future we will rely on project-related funding applications and paid partnerships with research institutes. We do not pursue any profit interests and all the money we raise goes towards maintaining and developing our team, our website and outreach.

Planning:

How much lead time do we need before we can get started? What are the first steps?

From the decision to work with us to the first publications on our platform, it takes two to three months on our part. During this time, we work with you to sharpen the channel topic, form a team of researchers and editors together, develop a narrative curve for our publications and analyse how the defined target group can be reached in the best possible way

Time required:

How much time does a collaboration cost me?

Our ideal looks like this: We have two months of preparation time together and publish over a period of six months. We then work together to ensure that the channel content is used sustainably (e.g. in teaching or as information material for politicians, the media and the public).

Personnel:

What personnel costs will I incur?

Ideally, you will provide (2-3) researchers and capacities for project management and coordination. However, it is also conceivable that we engage external scientists and you only keep an eye on the coordination.

Service:

What services do I get with a co-operation?

We provide you with comprehensive support in various areas, including publication, communication, development and co-operation initiation. We also offer services such as maintaining media contacts and a variety of other services. Our aim is to provide you with the best possible support at every step of your project and to ensure that your goals are achieved.

Costs:

What financial outlay should I expect?

te.ma consists of a team of around ten people who look after 2-3 channels at the same time. The operation of a complete channel per month accordingly amounts to approx. 25,000 euros. We offer customised packages for all interested cooperation partners, ensuring that your needs are met. In addition, if desired, we will work closely with you to jointly acquire funding and secure additional resources for your project.

Prior knowledge:

Do our researchers already have to be proficient in journalistic writing?

Of course, the researchers do not have to be text professionals. Our programme includes the didactic and practical introduction of researchers to the role of curator. This role includes a feeling for the socially relevant topics and perspectives of their own research, for researching external and international materials as well as accessible, professional writing and the contextualisation of certain aspects and scientific positions.

Rights:

Who holds the rights to texts published on te.ma?

Every author of a text published on te.ma holds the rights to it. One of the ways we ensure this is by assigning each text a unique DOI. The texts remain permanently online and always freely accessible. We also publish under clearly regulated but public domain Creative Commons licences. Texts may be quoted without any problems.
